Kids in Motion Fitness Corner

running stick kidIt was great to see so many of you at the Fall Family Picnic on Thursday night. It is always such a great community building event. Hopefully you picked up some information from my table about upcoming North Davis Elementary and community events, got your Kids in Motion Fitness questions answered, and enjoyed seeing the bike blender making cool drinks using people power.

I have met with 4th-6th grades to go over their skill specific classroom PE training: kicking and trapping (soccer related skills), overhand throwing (softball/baseball and football related skills), Presidential Physical Fitness Testing (mile run, push-ups, sit and reach, abdominal curl-ups, shuttle run, pull-ups/chin-ups). These skill units will rotate through all three grade levels over the next three months.

Upcoming Fitness Events:
Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play is an entire day dedicated to active play, scheduled for Saturday, September 24. Nickelodeon goes completely “dark” for three hours, turning off programming to encourage kids to get up, get out, and go play! Make a commitment as a family to be active: walk/bike to a local park, go for a swim, play a game, have a scavenger hunt, try rock climbing, visit a national park, go canoeing, or take the dog for a walk.

On Sunday, October 2 the Davis Odd Fellows presents the World’s Greatest Bicycle Parade. This is a fundraiser for the Davis Schools Foundation as well as an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record. Come join in the FUN! Riders ages 7+ can participate, however you must pre-register at www.WorldsGreatestBicycleParade.com.

Wednesday, October 5 is the National Safe Routes to School “Hike it, Bike it, I Like it! J” day. It is a day dedicated to using your body to get to school (no cars). Be creative, ride your scooter or skateboard…walk with a group of friends…ride your bike. If you decide to participate, when you arrive at school, head to one of the check-in tables (in front of school or on black top). We need your child’s name and teacher and their mode of transportation.

  • Vocabulary Books and Planners were purchased for NDE’s Secondary Students
  • The PTA provided funds for Music Enrichment for the students of NDE
  • Each grade level received a grant of $1,000 to enrich NDE students’ learning experience
  • Funds were provided for NDE’s library to purchase books/materials
  • Playground Equipment was provided for the kids to use during recess free time
  • The SRA Reading Program was provided as enrichment for the classes of NDE
  • The Hospitality Committee, along with their MANY helpers, provided treats and special lunches for the staff to say THANK YOU for their hard work and dedication!

Thank You Garden Teachers and Parents! (Carolyn Teragawa)

Our 9 garden classes did a beautiful job planting vegetables in the Science Garden Boxes and preparing the front site for our new Herb/Sensory garden.  We also composted, planted wildflowers and bulbs, made soaps, released ladybugs, and played with wiggly worms.  We look forward to more fun garden activities in the fall!

Summer Garden Help at NDE (Carolyn Teragawa)

Would you like to harvest some tomatoes?  Try out a worm composter before you buy one?  Snip some herbs?

The NDE gardens could use some help over the summer.  We have open plots with automatic watering if you would like to start your own summer garden.  The crops and herbs we have planted will also need some attention and weeding but the bonus is that you get to harvest the bounty!

If you are interested in summer gardening and helping with maintenance, please email Garden Coordinator Carolyn at ckteragawa@comcast.net.  You don’t need to commit for the entire summer.
